Hawaii is situated within a DoD corrosion zone 4 region. Regions with 1-4 ratings showing 4 the highest corrosion or most difficult for metals to survive their design life.
Chlorides (salt) are known to accelerate corrosion so we are dealing with chlorides everyday with our island lifestyle. Results of high surf visits some of the remotest locations in the center of our islands as the chlorides combined with our natural tradewinds can travel up to 35 miles inland.
The chlorides form an easy path for condensation to form. As an example, in our island homes and eateries salt shakers, a few grains of rice are mixed with the table salt. The reason is that the rice absorbs the moisture that salt attracts to keep the salt flowing.
Chlorides also work to form a bridge or path for the deposits of the spent or consumed metal to travel upon. Various colored oxide deposits with tell tale build up of fine grit or soft to coarse bubbling mounds of deposits form on the solution of chlorides moisture with oxygen at the hot corrosion cell. Heavily scaled oxides on carbon based steel characteristically look like over-sized and thick potato chips. With the concentrations of chloride and moisture being held at the good substrate or below the corrosion oxide deposits, these deposits of rust oxides add more fuel to the charged corrosion cell as the moisture is held in suspension and works to combine with the chlorides to keep the corrosion cell highly active. BOTTOM LINE - RUST!
Since the corrosion cell works like a battery operated device which allows free movement of electrons to pass over the surface of metal, the energy that was used to manufacture the metal in the form of heat, is slowly released back into the environment while consuming the metal in the form of corrosion and rust.
The results of corrosion affect all of us in various way, a most recent study has shown that corrosion is a $297 billion dollar problem in the USA.
